The cleanup guide
Keep the memories. Clear the copies.
Burst shots, forwarded pictures, edited exports, and backups of backups. A little review helps you make room without losing a photo you love.
1. Know what counts as a duplicate
Exact duplicates are byte-identical files: the same photo copied or downloaded twice. They are usually the easiest to reduce to one copy, but check their folders first. A copy in a backup folder or shared album may serve a purpose.
Similar photos are different files that look alike: a burst sequence, a reframed scene, or an edited version. They need your judgment, because the differences can be the reason you want to keep both.
2. Scan a manageable batch
Choose a folder or a set of photos you recognise. Oshoot’s browser cleaner compares file contents using SHA-256 to find exact copies, even when their names differ. Fast visual matching uses perceptual hashes and image measurements to suggest similar photos. An optional downloaded AI model can help with visual matching, and runs locally in your browser.
Your selected photos stay on your device. Oshoot’s browser scanner does not upload them. Model downloads, website requests, and diagnostics are explained in our privacy policy.
3. Review before marking anything
Every photo starts as kept. A suggested keeper uses measurements such as sharpness and resolution; it cannot know which expression, framing, or memory you prefer.
- Start with exact copies and check where each file is saved.
- Compare similar shots at a useful size and choose for yourself.
- Mark only the photos you want on your cleanup list. Oshoot keeps at least one photo in every group.
- Download the CSV as a review sheet for your next step.
4. Remove originals with care
The browser cleaner cannot delete or move your files. Its CSV records the photos you reviewed and your decisions. Only rows marked “on cleanup list” represent files you selected for possible removal.
Use the file name and available relative path to find each original in your file manager. Check the location and keep a recent backup before deleting. A recycle bin may offer a recovery window, but it is not a substitute for a backup. Removing a file from a synced folder can affect other devices too.
The native Android preview is a separate app in development. Its supported gallery workflow uses Android’s own trash confirmation and expiry; these browser instructions describe CSV review and manual cleanup.
